By using Spotlight, and having the System Preferences : Spotlight : Search Results Documents, PDF Documents, and any other category relevant to the documents you are searching. In that Spotlight panel, click on Privacy, and then drag/drop your startup drive (e.g. Macintosh HD) icon onto the Privacy panel. Then select it, and click [-] to remove it. Spotlight will then start indexing those selected categories.
Apple has an article, Narrow your search results on Mac, that may help in refining your search technique.
If you are searching for a discrete word, and not a word that is a substring of another word, then you want to use this form:
" word "
if you are searching for two or more words that are adjacent:
" first second "
if you are searching for a word in a PDF document:
kind:pdf " word "
The Spotlight searches will search through multiple folders in your user account and the System.
